CSM storage failure or high usage

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

The following messages appear:

IVT5506I IVTSMCEX STORAGE ALLOCATION FAILED IN CSM
IST561I STORAGE UNAVAILABLE: IO BUFFER POOL

Buffer pool can be any VTAM buffer pool.

Cause

VTAM, CSM and TCPIP use excessive amounts of ECSA or CSM ECSA storage.

Resolving the problem

Issue the following commands to determine the status of ECSA storage:

  • D NET,CSM

The following command output displays CSM storage by pools and storage usage:

The sample output above represents a test system with no activity.

The highlighted messages above (IVT5539I, IST449I and EZZ8455I) show the current ECSA storage usage. You can identify who is using excessive ECSA storage to determine the problem area. Look at the storage usage during normal system operations in order to compare it to your storage shortage experiences.

Review the following information APARs for known problems in VTAM, CSM and TCPIP and apply the recommended maintenance to your system:

II12657
II13442
II12658

Gather the following documentation for further problem determination:
  1. A console dump of VTAM and TCPIP address spaces with ECSA and all storage (0000000-7FFFFFFF)
  2. Data spaces of VTAM Internal Traces and TCPIP CTRACEs
  3. System message log
  4. Output from the commands shown above.
