Optimizing Performance for TSM DRP and Centera

Troubleshooting

Problem

Default TSM installation options may not be optimal for a high-performance Data Retention Protection (DRP) solution using EMC Centera.

Resolving The Problem

To optimize performance for a TSM Data Retention Protection (DRP) solution using EMC Centera, follow these steps during or after installation. Refer to document 1155818, General Guidelines for setting up Centera with TSM DRP, for basic information and steps to be used for setting up the TSM server with Centera.

    • Choose a reasonable TSM volume size for use with the Centera. This value is only a logical entity, but it does have bearing on the overhead required to manage TSM volumes and the data residing on those volumes. We recommend using a 512 MB to 4096 MB volume size. This is done by updating the TSM device class that describes the Centera and using the mincap keyword. For example: update devclass centeraclass mincap=512m
    • Allow the TSM server to use multiple sessions with the Centera. We recommend allowing at least 20 sessions. This is also done by updating the TSM device class that describes the Centera and using the mountlimit keyword. For example: update devclass centeraclass mountlimit=20
    • If a single TSM client node will be used to store or retrieve a large number of objects, then it should also be configured to allow multiple sessions with the Centera. This is done by updating the TSM node definition for all nodes that may require multiple sessions. Different nodes may be configured with different limits to the number of allowed sessions. For example: update node centera_node1 maxnummp=20

    • By default, TSM object retrieve operations will preempt a store operation if contention for a mount point or volume occurs. Preemption may cause the store operation to fail, and therefore for operations with the Centera, we recommend disabling TSM preemption. This is done by using the NOPREEMPT server option in the TSM server options file.

It is also highly recommended to keep current on maintenance for operating system, important device drivers, hardware microcode, and TSM component software.
