Error: 'Unable to update Catalog: Insufficient Memory - Catalog pool is full' when Catalog task runs

Technote (FAQ)

Question

When the Domain Catalog task attempts to run and aggregate the databases in the Lotus® Domino® Domino Catalog, the following error displays:

"Unable to update catalog: Insufficient memory - catalog pool is full".

This error can be encountered either by the catalog task running at 1:00 AM via the Notes.ini, or manually by running "load catalog" at the server console. The error does not occur with the initial population of catalog.nsf

Answer

This issue was reported to Quality Engineering and has been fixed in Domino 6.5.3.

Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Domino Release 6.5.3 MR fix list (available at http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/lotus):

    Server
SPR# JCHN5XCTS5 - To prevent the error 'catalog pool full' when running the catalog task on a server with many databases with long path names, allow for the pool size to be increased from the default of 1mb all the way up to 200mb via the CATALOG_POOL_SIZE_MB= notes.ini parameter.
The error occurs because there are too many databases in the directory, and they are reaching the hard pool limit of 1MB. The catalog can be created initially, but after it is created, and attempted to be re-aggregated, it is hitting this limit and produces the error.

Refer to the Upgrade Central site for details on upgrading Notes/Domino.
