Problem(Abstract)
Server messages ANR8302E and ANR8944E appear to say just about the same thing, but they are different.
Cause
Both ANR8302E and ANR8944E are Tivoli Storage Manager server messages issued for I/O errors. Which message is issued, depends on the KEY value returned in the sense data for the I/O error.
Resolving the problem
The difference between these two messages is that the ANR8944E is issued when the KEY value returned in the sense data following the I/O error is a 3 or a 4. A KEY value of 3 means medium error and a KEY value of 4 means hardware error. The ANR8302E message is issued in the case of all other KEY values returned in the sense data for I/O errors.
As seen in the details of the messages below the ANR8944E explicitly states that a hardware or media (medium) error has occurred on the drive. While the ANR8302E indicates an I/O error (any of the other 15 KEY values) occurred.
ANR8944E Hardware or media error on drive drivename (OP=internal code,
Error Number=internal code, CC=internal code, KEY=internal code,
ASC=internal code, ASCQ=internal code, SENSE=sense data, Description=error
description). Refer to Appendix D in the 'Messages' manual for recommended
action.
Explanation: A hardware or media error has occurred while operating on the
designated drive.
ANR8302E I/O error on drive drivename (OP=internal code, Error
Number=internal code, CC=internal code, KEY=internal code, ASC=internal
code, ASCQ=internal code, SENSE=sense data, Description=error description).
Refer to Appendix D in the 'Messages' manual for recommended action.
Explanation: An I/O error has occurred while operating on the designated
drive.
To determine the source of either of these types of errors the ASC and ASCQ values should be used to determine the explicit failure condition reported by the device. The Appendix of the Tivoli Storage Manager Message manual includes a table that provides the Standard SCSI II definitions of each ASC/ASCQ pair. Note that some devices have unique ASC/ASCQ value specific to themselves which should be documented in the device manuals.
