IBM Support

Unable to access \\host\share\view.vws": Invalid argument

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

This technote explains why sporadic access errors occur while attempting to use an IBM® Rational® ClearCase® view on Microsoft® Windows®.

Cause

Attempts to access any view from a specific Windows client results in the following error message:

Unable to access \\host\share\view.vws": Invalid argument

Note: Other users work fine, even with the same view.

Starting ClearCase Explorer and attempting to select properties of the view results in the following error:

Unable to display properties of Z:, Unable to access "Z:": No such file or directory
Unable to resolve name "Z:" to a ClearCase entity.

Note: This problem is sporadic as after a period of time this specific user can work again.

Investigation on the View Server host yields the following cause in the Windows Event Viewer Logs:

Source: License Server
Description:
No license was available for user <username> using product SMBServer 5.0

The SMBServer is part of Microsoft Windows. If Windows does not allow a user connect to the Server due to unavailable licenses, ClearCase will fail as well.

Resolving the problem

Review the Microsoft Support Knowledge Base Article Out of License Error Messages in SBS 2000 Event Logs (Q305138) for more details on the problem as well as the solution.
