This technote explains why after running the IBM Rational ClearCase cleartool umount -all command while logged in as root on UNIX or Linux results in the error, cleartool: Warning: The view cannot be started because the MVFS is not installed, while attempting to start a view.
Although the installation of ClearCase did include the MVFS, once the umount command has been run, the output of cleartool -ver does not show MVFS.
Also, you may see:
ClearCase daemons: albd_server MVFS kernel module could not be found (8:1)The ClearCase mvfs file system will not be loaded
This behavior is expected on all platforms other than Solaris with ClearCase 4.0 or later.
Except on Solaris, if you enter "cleartool umount –all" as root on a platform that supports the operating system command "umount –a", the viewroot directory (/view) is unmounted. To remount the viewroot directory, you must stop and restart ClearCase.
Note: On Linux, not only is /view unmounted, but the MVFS kernel module is unloaded.
Resolving the problem
To avoid this problem on platforms other than Solaris, do not run "umount -a" as root.
ClearCase needs to be restarted to be able to start the view.
- Stop ClearCase
- 2003.06.00 or 7.x: /opt/rational/clearcase/etc/clearcase stop
- 2002.05.00 and earlier: /usr/atria/etc/atria_start stop
- Start ClearCase
- 2003.06.00 or 7.x: /opt/rational/clearcase/etc/clearcase start
- 2002.05.00 and earlier: /usr/atria/etc/atria_start start
