About Rational ClearCase Atria Licensing

Technote (FAQ)

Question

How can I obtain new or additional IBM® Rational® ClearCase® Atria licenses; how can I import the license string, and how can I move existing licenses to a new server?

Answer

This technote serves to consolidate the basic overview of ClearCase Atria licensing and provides pointers on how to obtain new or additional licenses, how to import the license string, and how to move existing licenses to a new server.

Note: For details about later ClearCase versions, refer to the ClearCase Information Center documentation.

Note: Support for IBM Rational Common Licensing was extended to Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearCase MultiSite in version 7.0. Both ClearCase Licensing (formerly known as Atria Licensing) and Common Licensing options are available in the ClearCase 7.x versions. Although much of the information contained in this technote also applies to the ClearCase 7.x versions, refer to the IBM Rational ClearCase Information Center documentation for your installed ClearCase version under the topic of Configuring licensing for Rational ClearCase for further details about ClearCase licensing.

About Rational ClearCase Atria Licensing

Rational ClearCase Atria licenses uses a proprietary floating license scheme. To use ClearCase, you must obtain a license, which grants the privilege to use ClearCase on any host served by the same license server.

The license server component is installed with a Rational ClearCase server installation; it cannot be installed separately or as a license server only. The full installation of ClearCase is required in order to serve out ClearCase licenses, and there is no separate license server program.

Note: ClearCase MultiSite ships with ClearCase and can be installed, but a MultiSite license is required to use this functionality.

To request new or additional ClearCase (or ClearCase MultiSite) licenses, go to
Rational Support, Licensing and then select the Rational License Key Center.

Note: You will need to provide a Host ID for the server that will be used as the ClearCase license server, refer to technote 1131246 for directions on how to obtain the Host ID.

If you obtain additional licenses, review technote 1135202 for specifics related to modifications made to the ClearCase license server.

The considerations for moving ClearCase licenses to a new server are outlined in technote 1206210.

For more information, refer to IBM Rational ClearCase Administrator's Guide > Licensing and License Administration. If you need a soft copy, the cc_admin.pdf is available on any host with ClearCase installed located by default in:

Importing Rational ClearCase Atria licenses

After a Rational ClearCase (or Rational ClearCase MultiSite) license is generated in the IBM Rational License Key Center, you will need to download the license.txt file which contains the relevant license strings.

Note: The ClearCase license is not operating system specific; however, the key can only be used on the machine that the
Host ID was obtained from.

The license string will be in the form of:
-license ClearCase <TEMP> *.30 31060330 42b7212f.3f22t5yz.02
-license MultiSite <TEMP> *.30 31060330 42a8139d.f8pf4e91.02

Note: The entire license string is required when updating the license.db file.

Installing licenses on UNIX or Linux:
Add the complete license string to the license.db file using a text editor on the file:
/var/adm/atria/license.db (or /usr/adm/atria/license.db on HP machines only)

Installing licenses on Windows:
Add the license string by opening the ClearCase Properties panel, go to Start (> Settings) > Control Panel > double-click the ClearCase icon > Licensing tab:

Configure clients to use the license server:

On each host in which ClearCase is installed, the installation procedure records the name of the license server host. This is used to point the ClearCase client to the license server:

  • On UNIX and Linux, the license server host name is stored in a text file named /var/adm/atria/config/license_host (or /usr/adm/atria/config/license_host).

  • On Windows, the license server host name is stored in the Windows Registry, but can be modified using the ClearCase Properties panel, go to Start (> Settings) > Control Panel > double-click the ClearCase icon > Licensing tab > modify Use license server on host:

For more information on the license.db, refer to IBM Rational ClearCase Administrator's Guide > Licensing and License Administration > Setting Up a License Server > The License Database. If a soft copy is needed, refer to the directions above,
cc_admin.pdf.

Calculate the number of licenses required per site

If you want to calculate approximately how many licenses would be required for a company with X users, you will need to contact your Rational Sales representative for assistance. There is no formula to calculate the number since multiple factors come into play to determine the "right" number for your site.
