Troubleshooting
Problem
This technote explains how an IBM® Rational® ClearCase® view that is restored incorrectly can result in the error []Unable to perform view startup operations[] on Microsoft® Windows®.
Cause
Attempts to start a view, results in the error:
Unable to perform view startup operations... Unable to get view handle.
A check of the view server logs list several "unknown style protections" errors. However, using fix_prot did not resolve the problem.
Note: The problem is only with restored view, and new views created on this machine work correctly.
The machine that was hosting the view was re-imaged and the machine name was changed. The view was backed up to a network share before the re-image was done, and then simply copied back. This is the source of the "unknown style protections" errors.
The hostname change caused the existing view to have incorrect host information for the view server. In this case, the global path was correct but the view server host name was not.
Resolving The Problem
Replace the registry and view tag entries for the restored views using the cleartool sub-commands register and mktag, respectively.
- cleartool register -view -replace <view-storage-pname>
- cleartool mktag -view -tag <view-tag> -replace <view-storage-pname>
For more details on cleartool sub-command use, refer to IBM Rational ClearCase Command Reference, or run cleartool man register | mktag from command line.
