Cannot access the online help due to proxy server

Problem(Abstract)

This technote describes suggested steps to take for getting the online help in WebSphere® Studio to work when you cannot bypass the proxy server due to your company policy.

Resolving the problem

Try these suggested steps for accessing online help in WebSphere Studio products when you are unable to bypass the proxy server.

For WebSphere Studio v5.0.x:

Force your browser to look first on the local system before going out to the proxy server. In the file, ws_installdir\eclipse\plugins\org.eclipse.tomcat_XXXXX\preferences.ini
where ws_installdir is the location where WebSphere Studio is installed:

    • Set port=80 or some other firewall-friendly value.
    • Set host=localhost (or 127.0.0.1 or the actual hostname).


For WebSphere Studio v5.1.X:

Changing the port and host properties, as described previously, in the preferences.ini file in the org.eclipse.tomcat plug-in does not work. This is documented in the WebSphere Studio v5.1 release note, which is a product documentation defect. The supported method for v5.1.X to force the browser to look first on the local system before going out to proxy server is as follows:
  1. On the menubar of the workbench select Window > Preferences > Help > Help Server.
  2. Type localhost or 127.0.0.1 for the field Host name or IP address of local machine.
  3. Type 80 for the field Port for the server to listen on.
  4. Restart WebSphere Studio for changes to take effect.
