Question

Why does the export metadata utility continue to run for a long time without any activity on the processor?

Answer

There are many reasons why this problem can occur. The most probable cause is that the application has run out of storage in the application heap. To confirm that this is the cause of the problem, you must run a CLI trace. Issue the following command at the DB2 command line:

update cli cfg for section common using trace 1 tracepathname x:\pathname traceflush 1
If the CLI trace indicates that there is not enough storage in the application heap, follow the instructions below to resolve the problem. If the CLI trace indicates that this is not the cause of the problem, contact IBM Software Support.

To create more storage in the application heap, increase the application heap size (applhpsz) parameter for the control database to 4096 or more (the default size is 128) and retry the export process.
  1. From the DB2 Control Center, expand the Systems folder until you locate the control database. Right-click the control database and select Configure.
  2. Click the Performance tab.
  3. Scroll down the menu and select the Application heap size parameter. Change the value to 4096 or more. Click OK. A DB2 message is displayed confirming the change. Click Close.
  4. Restart all processes that are connected to the control database using the following steps:
    For Windows NT:
    1. Open the Windows Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the Services icon.
    3. Stop, then restart both the Warehouse server and the Warehouse logger.

    For Windows 2000:
    1. Open the Windows Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the Administrative Tools icon.
    3. Double-click the Services icon.
    4. Stop, then restart both the Warehouse server and the Warehouse logger.

Retry the export process with the new application heap size.
