Error description

  • You work with IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0.0.1 (FixPack 1 installed)
and use a data file which include string and numeric variables
on Analyze - survival - Cox Regression
On the dialog you select a string variable and click it to
covariates section of the Cox Regression dialog.
Then you click on Button Categorical.
The string variable is displayed on the right site of the dialog
as expected (Cox Regression: Define Categorical Covariates) as
string variables can be used as categorical covariates.
Next, you click on the arrow button in the middle of the dialog
in order to click the string var to the left site of the dialog
    (Covariates section).
You will get a dialog 'String variables are not allowed in the
list' which is expected as well since on the Covariates section
of this dialog only numeric variables can be used. Click
    Continue to close this dialog.

Then, on main cox regression dialog you select a second string
variable and put it on categorical covariates below first string
variable and you click again on Categorical button.

You notice that the dialog is empty. The two string variables
are not displayed on right site (Categorical Covariates) at all.
The Continue button is inactive. You can only click on Cancel
    button.

The expected behavior is that string variables should be
displayed on dialog Cox Regression: Define Categorical
Covariates for section Categorical Covariates as string
variables can be used in this procedure.
As a workaround click the string variables you want to use on
covariates section of main cox regression dialog and on dialog
Cox Regression: Define Categorical Covariates do not use the
arrow in the middle of the dialog. Then you can perform the
    analysis with no problems.
