Error description

  • You have used the MEANS procedure (Analyze->Compare
    Means->Means) to provide descriptive statistics on one or more
    dependent variables for each of several groups and for the
    overall data set. The group variable is a long string variable,
    i.e. it has more than 8 characters. Some of the values of this
    group variable are not unique in the first 8 characters, i.e.
    some pairs or sets of groups have names that are identical in
    the first 8 characters, although they are unique overall.
    Your descriptive statistics results ("Report" table) show
    distinct results for each group so it appears that the long
    strings for group names were not a problem. However, the DF
    (degrees of freedom) for the group variable in the ANOVA table
    appears to be too small. The DF for group should be the number
    of groups minus 1 (MEANS only runs one-way ANOVAs) but the DF in
    your results is less than that. You notice that if groups with
    names that are not identical in the first 8 characters were
    combined, this combination would account for the DF in your
    ANOVA table.
    The MEANS procedure does truncate long string group names to 8
    characters for the ANOVA results (although it does not do so for
    the descriptive statistics requested by the /CELLS subcommand),
    combining groups whose long string names were not unique in the
    first 8 characters. A defect has been filed with Development.

Local fix

  • As a workaround, you could recode the long string values to
    short (8 characters or fewer) strings that you know are unique.
    You could also autorecode the long string variable
    (Transform->Automatice Recode) . Autorecode creates a numeric
    version of the variable with the original string values as value
    labels.
    The UNIANOVA procedure (Analyze->General Linear
    Model->Univariate) provides descriptive statistics and ANOVA
    results and does not truncate long strings for the ANOVA
    results. UNIANOVA does not provide as wide an array of
    descriptive statistics as MEANS.
