Error description

  • Small Excel link report very slow to run. The XL-refresh always
results in a SQL query retrieving amounts from the database. In
our environment the database query itself, i.e. just the pure db
query not counting anything else as updating the Excel sheet
with the result set and so on, takes about 5+ minutes. Removing
an index in one single temp table makes that query run in
seconds. This is something the SQL Server optimizer should
handle much better. We have tried to figure out why it does such
a bad job for this specific report. In other reports this
specific index helps and makes the report run faster. Because of
this we cannot just remove the index. That would not be
acceptable for other reports. Because of this we have decided to
introduce an additional capability to decide in each XL report
if the involved indexes should be used or not. This means that
with a simple "setting" in the report will take the "fast path".
All that the user needs to do is to update one single cell with
a flag indicating to the application to run this specific report
in the alternative way. This new option will of course be
available for all XL reports. In some cases it will not have
any effect at all. In other cases it will affect the speed of
the refresh of the report. If this new option will not be used
the report execution will default to what it is today, i.e. no
negative effect on any existing reports. So even if this is now
tagged as a defect it will still need a a simple change in the
report to make it run faster after the defect is corrected.
