Error description

  • It has been observed that if you shutdown and start up the
Statistics Client 21FP1 product numerous times on a Windows 7
platform, the end-user loses their previously selected settings
    of our product.

During our tests, it has been observed under certain conditions
that if you quit the SPSS Statistics product but the 'stats.exe'
and 'spssengine.exe' is still running (on its way to shutting
down) when you start a new session of SPSS Statistics, the
program will display the following options (as if you have just
    installed the application):
    * Turn UNICODE on or use Locale Settings;
    * Welcome Screen appears even though you've selected the option
'Do not display this screen' in a previous session
    * Closing the Data Editor window will display the warning that
doing so will exit the program, even though the option 'Do not
    display' was previously selected.

There are also times when changing the Look and Feel of
Statistics will cause the program to lose the standard toolbar
of our product. It has been noted that these behaviours are not
consistent and there are times when following the same
replication steps will not produce any errors or issues.

Statistics should retain settings kept in registry for
end-user's preferences no matter how quickly the program is shut
    down and restarted again.

Local fix

  • This issue has been reported to the IBM SPSS Statistics
development team and will be addressed in the next Fix Pack.
Please refer to the Fix Pack schedule at
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21599157 for
    information on upcoming Fix Packs.

The current workaround is to wait for a few seconds after
shutting down the SPSS Statistics product to give enough time
for the appropriate processes (stats.exe and spssengine.exe) to
    close cleanly.
