Error description

  • Attempts to display the 'Reverse Phrase' for a Relationship line
    fail on an Entity Relation diagram (ERD) in IBM Rational System
    Architect (SA).

    This is known to occur with these three Relationship lines drawn
    between the Entities on the ERD:
    * Identifying
    * Non-Identifying
    * Non-Specific

    This issue was introduced with SA version 11.4.2.2 and has been
    reproduced with SA version 11.4.2.3.

    CONFIGURATION
    Environment = Microsoft Windows (R)
    Tool = IBM Rational System Architect (R)
    Versions = 11.4.2.2, 11.4.2.3
    SA Diagram = Entity Relation
    SA Symbols = these three Relationship lines:
       * Identifying
       * Non-Identifying
       * Non-Specific
    SA Symbol Display Mode = Reverse Phrase

    SYMPTOM
    No Text is displayed in the 'Reverse Phrase' text box beside the
    relationship line on the diagram. An upside down chevron is
    displayed instead. This looks like an expand indicator but does
    not do anything.

    STEPS TO REPRODUCE
    1) Create an Entity Relation Diagram
    2) Draw two Entities
    3) Draw one of the relationship lines described above between
    the two Entities
    4) Double click on the relationship line
    5) Add a Reverse Phrase text
    6) Press OK
    7) Right Mouse click on the relationship line
    8) Select Display Mode
    9) Check Reverse Phrase (Optional: you can also check Auto
    Resize)
    10) Press OK

    EXPECTED RESULTS
    To be able to see the 'Reverse Phrase' in the text box beside
    the relationship line and be able to resize it.

    ACTUAL RESULT
    As per the symptom, the 'Reverse Phrase' is not shown.

    WORKAROUND
    You can display the 'Reverse Phrase' and subsequently have the
    ability to resize it by altering your 'Preferences' as follows:
    a) Select Tools from the SA menu bar
    b) Select Preferences
    c) Check Vertical resize
    d) Check Horizontal resize
    e) Press OK

    ****************************************************************
    ERD reverse phrases and other displayable properties are
    sometimes truncated to the point of invisibility due to
    being assigned a zero-height text rectangle.

Problem conclusion

  • A prior fix to System Architect introduced an error into the
    function that determines when to allow a text rectangle to
    be resized and when to leave it as-is.
