Error description

  • Abstract:

In a new workspace, selecting Window ? Preferences ? Maven,
results in a mavenized workspace of approximately 400 MB even if
the 'Apply' or 'OK' button are not selected.

    Problem:

You select Window ? Preferences ? Maven and you notice the
workspace size on disk increases by approximately 395-400 MB.
Most of the files are created in the
    ?workspace?\.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.m2e.core folder.

    The default checked preference:
[x] Download repository index updates on startup option, causes
    a workspace to be 'mavenized'.

    For more technical details see
M2E Bug 404417 - 'Indexes are refreshed (increasing workspace
size) by just selecting Windows ? Preferences ? Maven '
    https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=404417

    Local fix:

    1) To undo an accidently mavenized workspaces:
    - If you are not going to use Maven, 'uncheck' the Maven ? [ ]
Download repository index updates on startup option.
    - If, somehow, the big files are there, you can remove the
    org.eclipse.m2e.core/nexus folder without any complications.

    2) Do not select the wizard option:

File ? New ? Other ? Maven ? Maven Project

    or

the workspace preference page: Window ? Preferences ? Maven

    or

Window ? Show View ? Maven ? Maven Repositories

Local fix

Problem summary

  • In a new workspace, selecting Window > Preferences > Maven,
results in a mavenized workspace of approximately 400 MB even
if the 'Apply' or 'OK' button are not selected.

Problem conclusion

  • The Maven > Download repository index updates on startup option
is unchecked by default now. This is to prevent the increase of
    the size of the workspace.
If you are going to use Maven in this workspace, you need to
check the Maven > Download repository index updates on startup
option, and either restart the product or update the index of
the repositories manually, using the Maven Repositories view:
    1. Select Window > Show View > Other > Maven > Maven
    Repositories.
    2. Expand Global Repositories.
    3. Right click on central, and select Update Index
The fix for this APAR is included in Rational Application
    Developer v8.5.5.
