Error description

  • You are trying to perform a left outer join on unsorted data in
    Statistics 21.0 Fixpack 1.
The GUI gives you STAR JOIN command syntax:
    DATASET ACTIVATE File1 .
    STAR JOIN
      /SELECT t0.x1, t1.y1
      /FROM * AS t0
      /JOIN 'File2' AS t1
        ON t0.ID=t1.ID
      /OUTFILE FILE=*.

You have previously run MATCH FILES command syntax, which you
expect to yield the same results:
    DATASET ACTIVATE File1 .
    MATCH FILES
      /FILE = *
      /TABLE = 'File2'
      /by ID .
    EXECUTE.

The MATCH FILES results are correct. The STAR JOIN results are
not. Specifically, the merge goes wrong when there are
non-sequential numerical keys (with large gaps) in the primary
file. The result is a complete failure to merge correctly.

A simple workaround in this context is to sort both files by the
key variables prior to merging (just as you did in versions of
Statistics prior to Statistics 21.0) and specify that you have
done so in the merge dialog. The dialog will then force MATCH
FILES command syntax rather than STAR JOIN and your merge will
    proceed correctly.

Local fix

  • This issue will be addressed in an upcoming Fix Pack. Please
refer to the Fix Pack schedule at
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21599157 for
    information on upcoming Fix Packs.

If you encounter the issue described above please open a Service
Request with IBM SPSS Technical Support. An Interim Fix was
developed for customers who need the fix prior to the next
    upcoming Fix Pack.

Note: Interim fixes are limited corrections to specific issues
reported by one or more customers. They are normally sent only
to customers who have reported one of the corrected problems,
and who require an immediate correction. Interim Fixes do not
address customer enhancement requests, and not all defect
corrections can be delivered as Interim Fixes. Due to their
urgency Interim Fixes undergo only targeted testing of specific
fixes, not full regression testing. If the fix is not urgently
required, you may prefer to wait for a scheduled Fix Pack
Release, which will be fully regression tested. Interim Fix
corrections, once fully regression tested, are automatically
included in a future Fix Pack.
