PM83704: CICS TS 5.1 REPORTS FALSE STORAGE NOTIFIES ( NO REAL SOS ) WHICH ARE DETECTED BY OMEGAMON AS 'TOTAL STORAGE NOTIFIES'

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• After conversion from CTS 4.1 to 5.1 we are now getting Storage
  Notifications showing in Omegamon/CICS. CICS stats show no SOS
  or
  programs being removed by compression.
  Previously on CTS 4.1 the storage notifications always showed as
  zero. For example "Total storage notifies  :      319 "
  OMEGAMON/CICS is "Tivoli Omegamon XE for CICS on z/OS"  5.1
  RSU1112 which does include the recommended CICS TS 5.1 fixes.

  After a CICS TS 5.1 INITIAL start the CICS SMA field which
  contain these notify values is being incorrectly incremented:
  SMA_SYSTEM_TASK_NOTIFIES =1 and then after
  5 minutes elapses, it is incremented to
  SMA_SYSTEM_TASK_NOTIFIES=2 and these values are seen in OMEGAMON
  In CICS TS 4.1 SMA_SYSTEM_TASK_NOTIFIES is always zero ( unless
  a real notifiable storage condition exists).
  The problems appears to be in module DFHSMSY which
  sets SMA_SYSTEM_TASK_NOTIFIES  ( SMA + x'250')

  In CICS TS 5.1, the SMSY task first gets suspended at start up,
  and it is resumed immediately, rather than suspend awaiting
  timeout or notification.
  

Problem conclusion

• DFHS2PP has been changed so that the SMSY task on CICS
  initialization is not resumed immediately.
  

Temporary fix

• FIX AVAILABLE BY PTF ONLY
