Error description

  • You installed IBM SPSS Statistics 21 on a Japanese Windows 7
operating system. You log on to the machine with a Windows user
    account name containing Japanese characters.

On Edit > Options > General tab you select UNICODE for Character
Encoding for Data and Syntax. The locale in the syntax is set to
Japanese as well (set locale= Japanese).
You click Analyze > Nonparametric Test > Related Samples. You
select some variables with Japanese variable names as test
fields and on Settings tab you select Friedman's 2-way ANOVA by
    ranks (k samples) nonparametric test.

However, when you run the analysis Statistics 21 will stop
working. You will get a Windows error message that spssengine
    has stopped working.

When you close this Windows dialog you get:
IBM SPSS Statistics 21: An unknown error has terminated
communication with the processor. The SPSS Statistics processor
    is unavailable.

As a workaround on Edit > Options tab select Locale's writing
system for Character Encoding for Data and Syntax and run the
Friedman test again. Another option is to either change the
Windows user account name or to use
Analyze > Nonparametric Tests > Legacy Dialogs > K Related
Samples with Friedman test while in unicode mode with Japanese
    user account name.
This issue was reported to IBM SPSS Development.
