PM76442: Replace All, in the Search, will hang

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• The 'replace all' function of the search hangs.
  Use LPEX to view a trivial file, local or remote.
  2. Press  ctrl-F
  3. Check boxes 'regular expression' 'wrap' 'restrict search to
  columns'  'start column 1' 'end column 6'
  4. Type a period in the 'find' field.  Nothing else should be in
  the 'find' or the 'replace' fields.
  5. Click 'replace all'.  That clicked button stays depressed.
  Click anywhere else to see the hourglass cursor.
  

Local fix

Problem summary

• In System z LPEX or Basic LPEX and fields are enabled (such as
  for COBOL or assembler), performing a Replace All when using a
  regular expression, restricting the column range and replacement
  string that is empty may result in LPEX looping forever and
  hanging.
  

Problem conclusion

• When columns were enabled in LPEX, and a Replace All operation
  was performed, LPEX did not take into account the field lengths,
  and therefore repeated the replace an infinite number of times.
  When fields are enabled LPEX will now only perform the replace
  all operation based on the field length.
  
  The problem listed in this APAR has been resolved with
  IBM Rational Developer for System z V8.5.1.1 Fix Pack which
  is available from the Recommended Fixes support download page:
