Error description

  • When attempting to access file elements in an IBM Rational
    ClearCase dynamic view from a Red Hat Enterprise Linux client,
    the following behavior has been observed if the VOB storage is
    mounted using Network File System version 4 (NFSv4).

    [user@rhel6 folder1]$ cat file
    cat: file: Not a directory

    This issue is accompanied by errors in the MVFS log (here with
    debug enabled):

    2012-06-25T12:08:31-04:00 mvfs(0): Error: cleartext pname=
    /net/hangar18/vobstore/vob1.vbs/c/cdft/30/3b/e0b1050651c04baca08

    2012-06-25T12:08:31-04:00 mvfs(0): Error: cleartext open failed
    view=rcs2 vob=/vobs/vob1 dbid=0x1d2 - Not a directory
    2012-06-25T12:08:31-04:00 mvfs(0): DEBUG: openv: mnode=38004800
    error=20

    Error 20 is the Linux C error code for 'Not a directory'
    (ENOTDIR).

    This problem has only been observed on RHEL 6.x. Oracle Solaris
    and SuSE hosts are able to mount the same VOB storage using
    NFSv4, mount the same VOB and access the same file element
    without issue.

    Steps to reproduce the issue:

    1) Mount VOB storage from a Solaris VOB server NFS share using
    NFSv4.
    2) Mount the VOB, set to a view and cd into the VOB.
    3) Cat a file element.

    WORKAROUND:
    Mount the VOB storage using NFS version 3 (NFSv3) or use a
    snapshot view.

    ****************************************************************
    When using ClearCase to access files for which the VOB
    storage is mounted using NFSv4 on RHEL6.3 systems, the user
    would receive ENOTDIR errors.

Problem conclusion

  • This is fixed in ClearCase 7.1.2.10 and 8.0.0.6.
