Error description

  • Abstract: Rational Developer for System z (RDz) 8.0.3.1 - When
CARMA Endevor Element is opened from MVS subproject, AbendsE37
    occurs on CRA$NDVR.DEPEND file.

This problem occurs when customer has multiple Endevor instances
and the Element that is being opened has been moved from one
Endevor instance/repository to another instance/repository. When
user opens the element from the MVS subproject, the editor opens
with the element source, however, the client remains hung in the
'content assist loading' process. On the host, the MSG3FILE
indicates that the CARMA Endevor RAM is looking for additional
dependencies on the system that the element was moved from but
the RAM receives a 'not found' (API0000I PROCESSING COMPLETE -
RC=00004 REASON=00006) on the element from Endevor. Following
the not found condition, the RAM then issues a 'generic' (blank
Element name) LIST ELEMENT call. Endevor returns a count
indicating that all elements in the system are dependencies. The
RAM then issues calls to get all the dependencies which causes
the CRA$NDVR.DEPEND file to get extremely large and in certain
cases cause an E37 or B37 abend.

    Local Fix:

Rebuild Endevor footprint of the Element that was moved.

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
01.When attempting to retrieve the dependencies for elements
whose footprint is not correctly built, all of the
dependencies are retrieved for all of the elements. This can
result in the temporary DEPEND DD dataset being out of space
       with an E37 abend.

Problem conclusion

  • 01.When the element information cannot be retrieved, there
should be no attempt to retrieve the dependencies. With this
fix, the dependencies are not retrieved if the element
information cannot be retrieved from the CA Endevor
       repository.
