Error description

  • Problem with com.ibm.ws.wim.adapter.ldap.LdapHelper cache
    growing without bounds in WebSphere Application Server
    V7.0.0.11. This is because in WebSphere Application Server
    7.0.0.11, cache used in LdapHelper was a weakHashMap (whose
    entries are removed by grbage collector). It was only in
    WebSphere Application Server V7.0.0.13 (and onwards), that we
    use ConcurrentHashMap in LdapHelper which was causing an
    unbound growth of cache.

    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    *                  Server                                      *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Application hung because of unbounded *
    * growth of VMM internal cache *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    Virtual Member Manager (VMM) maintains an internal cache to
    save the Distinguish Name of LDAP users. There was no
    mechanism to clean up this cache. As a result it eventually
    took up the entire memory causing application to hung.

Problem conclusion

  • The fix involved using soft references to implement this
    internal cache. Soft references clean up the cache as soon as
    memory is low, freeing up all the space occupied by the cache.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix packs 6.1.0.43, 7.0.0.23, and 8.0.0.3. Please refer to the
