Error description

  • An InvalidStateException exception is caused as follows:

    org.apache.openjpa.persistence.InvalidStateException: Attempt
    to change a primary key field of an instance that already has
    a final object id. Only new, unflushed instances whose id you
    have not retrieved can have their primary keys changed.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    * Server V7.0.0 who attempt to merge (that *
    *                  is, EntityManager.merge) a Java             *
    * Persistence API (JPA) entity which has *
    * been serialized and contains a compound *
    * primary key (that is, uses @IdClass). *
    *                                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: InvalidStateException can occur when *
    * merging a serialized JPA entity which *
    *                      contain a compound primary key.         *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    Take an entity which contains a compound primary key,
    specifically the entity uses @IdClass. When an instance of
    this entity is serialized (for example, part of a remote method
    call), if a user attempts to merge the instance (that is,
    EntityManager.merge), it could result in an
    InvalidStateException.

Problem conclusion

  • With this fix, code has been added to ensure that a JPA entity
    which contains a compount primary key can be properly merged
    after that entity has been serialized.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for
    inclusion in Service Level (Fix Pack) 7.0.0.19 of WebSphere
    Application Server version 7.0.0.
