Error description

  • Running z/OSMF with WAS OEM, based on WAS 7, we see a 15-17%
    performance
    degradation with SynchToOsthread enabled. Turning that off is
    not an option.
    Analysis using SAF traces, indicated that when using the
    Sync_To_OSthread option, almost every user interaction of a
    WebSphere
    application with the host generated a RACROUTE REQUEST=VERIFY
    & a new ACEE created. This is an expensive operation.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application Server
    * V7.0 for z/OS who enable the feature to *
    * synchronize the application server and z/OS *
    *                  thread identity.                            *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: A performance degradation is experienced
    * when enabling the SyncToOSThread feature.
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    When the SyncToOSThread feature is enabled, a native security
    context is created for every time the application server identit
    is pushed to the z/OS system identity. This operation is very
    expensive.

Problem conclusion

  • A cache was created for the native security contexts, so that
    it
    can be reused and the expensive creation operation is avoided.

    APAR PM25398 is currently targeted for inclusion in
    Service Level 7.0.0.15  of WebSphere
    Application Server.
