Error description

  • Authentication is failing for users with error "not a valid
    group" in a HP-UX environment ...
    .
     [10/28/09 14:16:10:069 GMT] 0000001f distContextMa 3 login
     failed: com.ibm.websphere.security.auth.WSLoginFailedException:
not a valid group; nested exception is:
             com.ibm.websphere.security.CustomRegistryException: no
     a valid group
    .
when the user is a member of a secondary group which contains a
large number of users (group line length is 953 characters).
After removing the user from this secondary group authentication
    is successful.
    .
Another secondary group the user is a member of which is 629
characters in length does not appear to cause any problem.
    .
Problem native call is getgrgid_r, which is being called with a
buffer size of 1024 (HP recommended buffer size), but in this
case a buffer size of 2408 is needed to accomodate the large
    group.

Local fix

  • Reduce the number of users in the secondary group, or remove the
    user from the secondary group.

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
When the user is a member of a secondary group which contains a
large number of users, WebSphere Application Server's internal
group buffer was not large enough to store the entries.

Problem conclusion

  • WebSphere Application Server's internal group buffer size has
been increased to handle large groups.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix pack 6.1.0.37 and 7.0.0.15. Please refer to the
