    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: ClassLoader leak from Application *
    *                      Server's thread pool when Java 2        *
    *                      security is disabled.                   *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    When Java 2 security is disabled, it is possible for threads
    created by the WebSphere Application Server thread pool to
    retain references to CompoundClassLoader instances associated
    with applications that may be stopped. This can lead to out
    of memory (OOM) conditions, as class loaders retain references
    to all classes that they have loaded.

    This occurs because ProtectionDomain objects which are copied
    from the originating thread to the newly created threads
    contain references to classes on the originating thread's
    stack, which could include application code loaded by an
    application classloader. When Java 2 security is enabled,
    those ProtectionDomains for classes on the stack below the
    thread pool's create method are not copied. If Java 2
    security is disabled (which is the default), those
    ProtectionDomains are copied and there is a chance for a
    classloader leak.

Problem conclusion

  • This fix resolves this problem by using an
    AccessController.doPrivileged(...) call which uses the Java 2
    security-enabled behavior. This change prevents the
    ProtectionDomain objects for the originating thread from being
    copied to the new thread pool thread, thus preventing the
    classloader leak.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix packs 6.1.0.35 and 7.0.0.13. Please refer to the
