Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: IBM WebSphere Application Server V7.0 users * * or administrators of JAX-WS applications * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: An "unmappable character" warning * * leads to a fatal error when deploying * * a Web Service application * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Install a fixpack containing this APAR * **************************************************************** During deployment or startup, a customer may encounter the following warning and subsequent fatal error: warning: unmappable character for encoding UTF8 [7/21/09 16:26:06:132 CLT] 00000051 WSModuleDescr E WSWS7027E: JAX-WS Service Descriptions could not be correctly built because of the following error: javax.xml.ws.WebServiceException: WSWS7054E: The Web Services Description Language (WSDL) file could not be generated for the service.data.xxxx Web service implementation class because of the following error: java.lang.Exception: A WSDL Definition could not be generated for the implementation class: service.data.xxxx at com.ibm.ws.websvcs.wsdl.WASWSDLGenerator.generateWsdl(WASWSDLGen erator.j ava:198) at org.apache.axis2.jaxws.description.impl.EndpointDescriptionImpl. generate WSDL(EndpointDescriptionImpl.java:1915) at org.apache.axis2.jaxws.description.impl.EndpointDescriptionImpl. <init>(E ndpointDescriptionImpl.java:405) This sympton was only encountered on a Linux system, but could occur on other operating systems. The root of the problem is the tool that the JAX-WS Web Services runtime uses to generate a wsdl file.
Problem conclusion
The WSDL generation tool is reading the java file associated with the JAX-WS Web Service interface that is packaged along with the customer's JAX-WS Web Service class file. If the java file is corrupted or was built on a different system, the warning and subsequent fatal exception occurs. Changes were made to the code to avoid reading the java file if the runtime detects that it is corrupted or built on another system. This avoidance code will ensure that the wsdl is generated and that processing continues correctly. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 7.0.0.7.
