Error description

  • Customer reports a java script error on Japanese AppScan version
    7.7.

    When using manual explore they get a java script error on .js pa
    ge this does not show in IE itself.

    They found that the javascript code has characters that are cont
    rol code for UTF-8, called BOM.
    AppScan judges BOM as Japanese characters.
    So, AppScan converted them to UTF-8.
    But in direct access by IE, IE judges the character code of this
     page as UTF-8. So, this issue did not occurr in IE.

    STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
      1. Open the following URL in IE or FireFox: http://dofku.free.
    fr/08133,999,760
    You get a JavaScript alert() pop-up, showing three Japanese char
    acters.
      2. Switched AppScan to Japanese language and change the Defaul
    t Encoding to EUC_JP.
      3. Set the above URL to be the Starting URL, then:
         - do 'Manual Explore': the embedded browser shows the page
    but no alert() pop-up!
         - open Scan Configuration and switch to 'Login Management';
     click 'Record': the embedded browser shows the page but no aler
    t() pop-up!
         - in Scan Configuration click the 'View in browser' button
    next to the Starting URL: the embedded browser shows the page bu
    t no alert() pop-up!

    I've made an interesting observation. Once the problem is reprod
    uced in Japanese, I switch AppScan back to English and I can sti
    ll reproduce the problem!

Local fix

Problem summary

  • When using AppScan embedded browser for manual explore
    customer may receive a java script error even though there
    seems to be no problem when doing it with IE.

Problem conclusion

  • There is an advanced option (OpenIEBrowser) that allows the
    user to use the IE browser instead of the embedded browser
    that comes with AppScan.
    Selecting IE instead of the embedded browser solves the
    problem.
