APAR status
Closed as program error.
Error description
When starting a message-driven beans (MDB) EJB 3.0 application which uses listner ports a NullPointerException can occur if the activation-config information in the deployment descriptor does not exist.
Local fix
Add activation-config information in the deployment descriptor as detailed in the following RAD information center pages: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/radhelp/v6r0m1/index.js p?topic=/com.ibm.etools.ejb.doc/topics/temessb.html If RAD is not being used then these properties can be set directly in the deployment descriptor xml as shown in the above link.
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server v6.1 with the feature pack for * * EJB3.0 and v7.0 * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: A NullPointerException occurs when an * * EJB 3.0 MDB attempts to start but no * * activation-config properties exists in * * the deployment descriptor. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** The following NullPointerException occurs when an application containing a message-driven bean (MDB) at EJB3.0 level is started: [6/23/09 9:10:50:345 CDT] 00000017 EJBContainerI E WSVR0040E: addEjbModule failed for xxxxxx.jar [class com.ibm.ws.runtime. component.DeployedEJBModuleImpl] javax.resource.ResourceException: java.lang.NullPointerException Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException at com.ibm.ejs.jms.listener.MDBListenerManagerImpl.create (MDBListenerManagerImpl.java:468) at com.ibm.ejs.container.MDBHomeBean.activateEndpoint(MDBHomeBean.j ava:152) This occurs due to no activation-config being set in the deployment descriptor. However this property is only optional and doesn't need to be set.
Problem conclusion
This APAR solves the problem and allows an MDB to be started without any activation-config properties. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 6.1.0.27 and 7.0.0.7.
