Error description

  • A WebServices application using JAX-WS handlers fails to work on
    6.1.0.23. The same application works on 6.1.0.21 and below.

    The application fails because the customer's application
    handlers are not run. The JAX-WS engine does not report any
    errors or warnings, but the following is seen in the trace:

    [4/5/09 19:20:23:718 CDT] 00000021 HandlerResolv 1
    org.apache.axis2.jaxws.handler.HandlerResolverImpl
    doesPatternMatch Pattern match failed: "http://myURL/:xyz" does
    not match "*"

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: JAX-WS application handlers fail to *
    * run in some scenarios. *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    A customer can supply JAX-WS application handlers with their
    application. The customer indicates which handlers are run
    by providing an xml file describing the handler chain.

    The following example xml file indicates that test.MyHandler
    handler should be run for all ports (*).

    <jws:handler-chains
    xmlns:jws="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee">
      <jws:handler-chain name="MyHandlerChain">
          <jws:protocol-bindings>some value</jws:protocol-bindings>
         <jws:port-name-pattern>*</jws:port-name-pattern>
          <jws:handler>
             <jws:handler-class>test.MyHandler</jws:handler-class>
          </jws:handler>
      </jws-handler-chain>
    </jws:handler-chains>

    Due to an error introduced by APAR PK70250 (FixPack 6.1.0.23),
    this scenario will not succeed. The test.MyHandler handler
    will not run, and no errors are reported by the JAX-WS engine.

    This failure is limited to the case where the customer uses a
    single wildcard (*) in the <jws:port-name-pattern> or
    <jws:service-name-pattern>.

Problem conclusion

  • The JAX-WS runtime code that performs the regular
    expression evaluation for the <jws:port-name-pattern> and
    <jws:service-name-pattern> elements was updated by PK70250.
    The PK72050 change introduced an error that incorrectly
    interpreted a sole wildcard (*) as not matching the port or
    service name.

    The regular expression algorithm is corrected and the sole
    wildcard (*) is correctly interpreted as matching any port or
    service name.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix packs 6.1.0.25 and 7.0.0.5. Please refer to the
