APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • IBM HTTP Server crashes when rotatelogs is run.

Local fix

  • When rotate log by file size, make sure the new log file name is
    different than the current log file name. In other words, make
    sure it really rotates to another log file rather than appending
    to the current log.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: IBM HTTP Server 6.0 and 6.1 users with *
    * configurations using rotatelogs that stayed up for a very *
    * long time.                                                   *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Rotatelogs would occasionally crash and *
    * be restarted, leaving a message in the error log: *
    *  Sat Apr 04 19:27:20 2009   notice  child pid 725090 exit    *
    * signal                                                       *
    * Segmentation fault (11)                                      *
    * piped log program '/path/to/HTTPServer/bin/rotatelogs        *
    * /path/to/access_log.%Y-%m-%d 10M' failed unexpectedly        *
    * Processing of web requests was not affected. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply this fix if rotatelogs is crashing *
    * after running for a long time. *
    ****************************************************************
     Rotatelogs leaked a small amount of memory each time
     a new log file was opened. Eventually it would crash
     and be restarted.

Problem conclusion

  • The memory leak was fixed.

    This fix is targeted for IHS fixpacks:
     - 6.0.2.37
     - 6.1.0.27
