    ****************************************************************
User ran a REORG TABLESPACE against a single partition of a
Partitioned By Growth (PBG) table space, which has non-zero
PCTFREE and/or FREEPAGE value defined. The utility failed in
the RELOAD phase with ABEND04E RC00E400318 due to an out of
space condition on the partition being reloaded into.

The problem is caused by the REORG utility not being able to
reload back all the data rows unloaded from the PBG partition,
which was full prior to REORG due to SQL inserts/updates using
up all the free space reserved by the PCTFREE and FREEPAGE
region. REORG tried to reserve the empty space indicated by
the non-zero PCTFREE and FREEPAGE value, and by doing so
    resulted in the out-of-space condition.

A similar problem can happen when running REORG against a
PBG table space with LOB columns defined.

To partially address this problem, this apar adds a new system
parameter called REORG_IGNORE_FREESPACE, which specifies whether
the REORG TABLESPACE utility will ignore the PCTFRE and FREEPAGE
values when reloading data rows into a PBG table space in the
    following scenarios:
    - When reorganizing a subset of the PBG partition(s)
    - When the table in the PBG table space has LOB column(s)

Valid settings for REORG_IGNORE_FREESPACE are NO and YES.
The default is NO, meaning that the PCTFREE and FREEPAGE values
will be honored by the REORG TABLESPACE utility.

Problem conclusion

  • Code has been modified to provide a new system parameter for
user to specify whether REORG should ignore the free space
established by the non-zero PCTFREE and FREEPAGE value.
