Error description

  • Responses cached via mod_mem_cache or mod_disk_cache may
    return incorrect Content-Type and Content-Encoding headers
    on cached requests.

    *) The Content-Type can mistakenly be transmitted as text/plain,
    the "default content type" as specified in the default
    httpd.conf as DefaultType. This may result in "save file ..."
    dialogues in a web browser.

    *) The Content-Encoding header can be excluded on cached
    responses, which may result in corrupted page contents if
    compression is enabled in IBM HTTP Server.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users with mod_mem_cache or mod_disk_cache   *
    * loaded and at least one CacheEnable directive in httpd.conf. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Unexpected values in Content-Encoding *
    * and/or Content-Type HTTP response headers                    *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply this fix if mod_mem_cache is in use *
    ****************************************************************
    This only applies when static content is cached by mod_mem_cache
    or mod_disk_cache, which can generally be disabled with little
    effect. Though the HTTP Server will process a bit more, the OS
    will generally do a better job cross-process.

    Cache modules save the outgoing headers before a limited set
    of Apache components can translate internal data structures
    into Content-Type and Content-Encoding headers.

Problem conclusion

  • mod_mem_cache (and mod_disk_cache in IBM HTTP Server version 7)
    were updated to ensure the Content-Type and Content-Encoding
    processing occurs before the response is added to the cache.

    This fix is targeted for IHS fixpacks:
     6.0.2.35
     6.1.0.25
     7.0.0.5
