Error description
On Oracle, an exception was not thrown in transaction commit when a persistable field with nullable=false was set to null.
Local fix
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of WebSphere Application Server * * V7.0 * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: On Oracle, if a non-nullable * * persistable BLOB field is set to * * null, an expected exception is not * * thrown. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** In OpenJPA, fields can be marked as non-nullable. When a BLOB marked as non-nullable is set to null, OpenJPA is expected to throw a UserException exception. However, when Oracle is used as the backing database, the exception is not thrown.
Problem conclusion
Oracle uses a special object for null blobs, obtained by calling BLOB.getEmptyBlob(). In OpenJPA's code in OracleDictionary.java::setNull(), no check was being made to find out whether a BLOB field was nullable or not. The value returned by getEmptyBlob() was directly assigned to the field. The fix is to ensure that the field is nullable (not marked as non-nullable), before this assignment is made. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fixpack 7.0.0.3.
