Error description

  • This APAR preconditions a V9 DB2 system for a future functional
    APAR which will provide the index compression support for those
    indexes that contain versioned keys.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All DB2 users that wish to perform schema *
    * changes that will affect an index marked *
    *                 as COMPRESS YES.                             *

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: When index compression is used, any *
    * schema change affecting the index key *
    * will result in the index being marked *
    * REBUILD PENDING. The ALTER statement *
    *                      receives SQLCODE +610, indicating       *
    * the object was placed in REBUILD *
    *                      PENDING.                                *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Please read ++HOLD for installation *
    *                 requirements and information.                *
    ****************************************************************
    Customers have requested the ability to make schema changes
    to a compressed index without the index always being marked
    as REBUILD PENDING.

    For example:
       Assuming index compression is active, the following ALTER
       would return SQLCODE +610 and set index to REBUILD PENDING:
          ALTER TABLE T1 ALTER col_name SET DATA TYPE VARCHAR(50);

    Without the new support, customers would either need to
    REBUILD INDEX or DROP/CREATE the affected index to remove the
    REBUILD PENDING state.

Comments

  • APAR PK75002 preconditions a v9 DB2 system for a future
    APAR (PK79312) that will provide schema support for indexes
    marked as COMPRESS YES.

    Code changes have been made to reduce the type of ALTERs that
    place a COMPRESS YES index into REBUILD PENDING. For example,
    the following statement will no longer mark the index as
    REBUILD PENDING:
         ALTER TABLE T1 ALTER col_name SET DATA TYPE VARCHAR(50);

    Any ALTER that affects index ordering will continue to mark
    the index as REBUILD PENDING. For example:
        ALTER INDEX index_name COMPRESS YES;
        ALTER INDEX index_name COMPRESS NO;
        ALTER INDEX index_name PADDED;
        ALTER INDEX index_name NOT PADDED;

    By allowing versioned keys in a COMPRESS YES index, it is
    important to note that index compression may be less efficient.
