Error description

  • Currently HTTP session manager has its built-in mechanism to
detect fail-over from one cluster member to another and
accordingly refresh the HTTP session data. This fail-over
detection mechanism works when Plug-in is handling only
one request in the session when its affinity server is down.

It has been seen that in the case where the affinity server of
a session is down and there are multiple requests in the same
session being simultaneously handled by Plug-in, The Plug-in
uses round robin or random load balancing mechanism to
distribute the multiple requests. This results in Plug-in
sending the requests to different servers. At this point, HTTP
Session Manager does not have enough information to determine
that a fail-over occurred, hence it does not refresh its
session data cache. This could result in the use of stale data
    by HTTP Session Manager.

The problem scenario described applies mainly to applications
or technologies capable of sending multiple requests
    simultaneously, Web 2.0 for example.

This issue requires a fix on both Plug-in and HTTP Session
Manager. APAR # for Session manager fix is PK68691.

This APAR addresses the plug-in fix which allows plug-in to add
extra header in request when it this sort of fail-over occurs.
This prompts Session manager to perform a cache refresh.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Stale Session data is used in *
    *                      creating a response                     *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
When an affinity server is down and there are multiple
requests in a session being concurrently handled by the
Plug-in, the requests are sent to multiple clone members but
Session manager does not detect that a fail-over has occurred,
therefore it does not refresh session data cache. Stale data
could be used to build response.

Problem conclusion

  • When all affinity servers are down and plug-in has to use a
Load balance algorithm such as Round Robin or Random, it now
appends an HTTP header to inform Session Manager a fail-over
to a non-affinity server has occurred.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fixpack 6.1.0.23, 6.0.2.35, 7.0.0.3.
