For security purposes customer has requested that the transfer of generated COBOL programs from Vagen to z/OS host be performed using Secure FTP rather than standard FTP.
Vagen customer was concerned that our current FTP process from workstation to host does not provide any encryption of the generate COBOL source and other components. They asked if it would be possible to provide them with Secure FTP for the transfer. Currently Vagen uses FTP to transfer the generate code from workstation to z/OS host. This process is performed by Object REXX scripts and is done without any encryption or security. More than anything it's a case of old functionality that has been around for a long time and pre-dates Secure FTP transfers. Mohammad Zanjani wrote a small Java application that customers can load into their Va Java workspace. This enables the Vagen 4GL code that will be generated into COBOL to utilise Secure FTP encryption. Also made changes to the Object Rexx script efksnd.rex to check if the customer is using Secure FTP and, if so, transfer the generated COBOL and other files via that rather than the old unsecure method. The fix for this problem was shipped directly to the customer and can be provided on request to any z/OS customer who wants to use Secure FTP.
