APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • In 8.5.5.1 support was released to generate an FFDC log when
sysprint buffer overflow events occur. This function is
enabled by default. A private variable exists to disable
this function. Request is to make this a public, documented
    variable.

Local fix

  • You can
disable the logging of buffer overflow events by setting:

    private_bbor_enable_buffer_overflow_ffdc_logging to 0
Go to Environment---WebSphere Variables then set scope at
    cell/node as
    desired and then select new.
    Name: private_bbor_enable_buffer_overflow_ffdc_logging
    Value: 0

    ****************************************************************
When traces are large, they maybe truncated if their size
exceed internal trace buffer lengths. There is no documented
setting to increase the size of the trace buffers to prevent
    traces from being truncated.

When traces are truncated, FFDC logs are created to provide
access to the full trace information. However, there is no
documented setting to disable the creation of these FFDC logs.

Note that when a trace is truncated a BUFFER_OVERFLOW string is
appended to the end of the trace.

Problem conclusion

  • Environment variable ras_max_string_buffer_size was added to
allow users to increase the size of WebSphere on z/OS' trace
    buffers.

    Environment variable ras_enable_buffer_overflow_ffdc_logging
was added to allow users to disable creating FFDC log entries
    when BUFFER_OVERFLOW conditions take place.

The following changes to the WebSphere Application Server
    Version 7.0 Information
Center will be made available in January, 2015.

The topic "Application server custom properties for z/OS" will
    be updated to
include the following description of new custom properties:

    ras_max_string_buffer_size:

Specifies the buffer size to be used for trace processing.
The buffer size default value of 16384 is also the minimum
    allowed buffer size.
If the trace is larger than the set value, a BUFFER_OVERFLOW
message is printed at the end of the truncated trace.

    Information Value

    Data Type: Integer
    Default 16384
    Used by Daemon No

    ras_enable_buffer_overflow_ffdc_logging

Specifies whether or not FFDC logs should be generated when
a trace is truncated because its size exceeds the length of
    internal buffers producing the trace.

Truncated trace entries in the logs will show a BUFFER_OVERFLOW
message at the end of the trace. By default, when truncated
traces are written, corresponding FFDC logs are generated to
provide a way to access all the information in the trace.

Set the value to 0 to disable the creation of FFDC logs.

    Information Value

    Data Type: Integer
    Default 1
    Used by Daemon No

APAR PI31128 is currently targeted for inclusion in
Service Level 7.0.0.37 of WebSphere Application Server V7.0
