APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When using virtual hostnames for the purpose of load-balancing
    or using DNS IP switching for the purpose of server failover,
    the ORB will fail to send requests to the appropriate IP
    address(es) if security is not enabled for the sending (client)
    side.

Local fix

  • Enable security. This will workaround the effected code path.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    *                  Server                                      *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: IIOP traffic continuing to go to old *
    * IP address after DNS altered. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    When using virtual hostnames/DNS IP switching, and a client
    which has turned off ORB security (default is on), IIOP
    connections would not notice DNS changes and continue to be
    routed to the original IP address(es). This was due to
    hostname-to-IP-address caching in the client's ORB code.

Problem conclusion

  • After applying this APAR to enable it, setting the
    client's ORB property:

    com.ibm.ws.orb.transport.alwaysResolveHostIP=true

    will cause the non-secure IIOP logic to always re-request the
    IP address when an IIOP connection is made by host name. This
    value can be set in the orb.properties file or via the Java -D
    command-line option. For more information about how ORB
    properties are resolved please see

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix pack 8.5.5.4. Please refer to the Recommended Updates
