Error description

  • An increase in transaction response time occurred in a CICS
    regions. A dump showed the region was being flooded with CESC
    transactions. There were numerous ICEs scheduled for this
    transaction and they all had ICERQID, the request
    identification, set to DFHCESC.
    A similar problem was fixed at subsequent releases of CICS
    by APAR PH03982.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All CICS Users. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The ICE chain contains many ICEs with *
    *                      REQID=DFHCESC and the CICS region       *
    * is periodically flooded with CESC *
    *                      transactions being attached.            *
    ****************************************************************
    A CICS region was COLD started. After observing an increase
    in transaction response time a dump was taken. This showed
    numerous ICEs on the ICE chain with REQID=DFHCESC whereas there
    should be no more than one of these at any time.

    APAR PH03982 resolved a similar problem that occurred on a WARM
    start. As with that reported problem, the issue is caused by a
    failure by DFHSNSC to cancel an existing CESC ICE before
    rescheduling CESC by adding a new ICE.

Problem conclusion

  • This fix contains 2 parts:
    1. CICS is changed so that ICEs for transaction CESC are not
    restored over a WARM restart.
    2. When scheduling CESC in DFHSNSC a DFHIC TYPE=CANCEL is now
    always attempted for a REQID=DFHCESC ICE.
    A response that the ICE was not found is treated as acceptable.
    This part of the fix applies regardless of the CICS start type.
