Error description

  • On certain EMC microcode levels TDMF's Soft Fence request
    fails. Subsequent TDMF processing fails in swap backout
    processing leaving the volume in an inconsistent state on
    participating systems.
    

Local fix

  • Use the TDMF NOFENCESOURCE option
    

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All TDMF users who's EMC DASD                *
    *                 microcode supports the Soft Fence            *
    *                 function. This may have been added           *
    *                 during a recent ucode update. This           *
    *                 code maybe known as 'zboost'.                *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: At the end of a migration if z/OS and   *
    *                      the CU support Soft Fence TDMF will     *
    *                      put the SRC volume into a Soft Fence    *
    *                      state.                                  *
    *                      EMC reject the Soft Fence CCW           *
    *                      when the source device is an RDF        *
    *                      device.                                 *
    *                      Due to the error TDMF will start a      *
    *                      backout process, all Agents will        *
    *                      swap back to the original SRC but       *
    *                      the Master will swap the volume.        *
    *                      This leads to the Agents using          *
    *                      the origial SRC and the Master          *
    *                      system using the new TGT.               *

    An integrity problem exists if the Agents and Master do not
    backout the swap, the symptoms are message GTD2458E and

Problem conclusion

  • A circumvention for this problem is to code the TDMF
    parm NOFENCESOURCE.
    It is not currently understood why a valid Soft Fence
    request is being rejected to RDF devices.
