Error description

• The network fails to come up for a Websphere Cast Iron
  hypervisor appliance after being upgraded to 6.1.0.9 or
  6.1.0.12.
  
  The errors seen in the output of net show memory from the VM
  console are:
  
  FAILURE GETTING HW/MAC ADDRESS FOR INTERFACE: "ETH0"
  FAILURE GETTING HW/MAC ADDRESS FOR INTERFACE: "ETH1"
  SYSTEM ERROR: No such device
  

Local fix

• Set the VM Network Adapter type to E1000 and reboot
  

Problem summary

• The network fails to come up for a WebSphere Cast Iron
  Hypervisor appliance after being upgraded to 6.1.0.9 or
  6.1.0.12.
  The errors seen in the output of "net show memory" from the VM
  console are:
  
  FAILURE GETTING HW/MAC ADDRESS FOR INTERFACE: "ETH0"
  FAILURE GETTING HW/MAC ADDRESS FOR INTERFACE: "ETH1"
  SYSTEM ERROR: No such device
  
  By default, when WebSphere Cast Iron Hypervisor Edition is
  installed it is configured to use E1000 network adapter.
  That is, the HVE's configuration describing how VMware should
  present "hardware" to the appliance causes e1000 drivers to be
  loaded within the appliance.
  This default configuration works properly, however optimized
  drivers such as Flexible, VMXNET2, and VMXNET3 do not work
  properly.
  This APAR could be an issue when HVE instances which have been
  modified this way are upgraded from 6.1.0.6 (or earlier) to
  6.1.0.9 (or later).
  
  As a workaround, users should replace non-default virtual
  network adapters with E1000 virtual network adapters.
  

Problem conclusion

• This APAR address the migration issues faced if users have
  customized the HVE configuration to use non-default network
  adapters.
  
  The fix is targeted for inclusion in WebSphere Cast Iron
  V6.3.0.1 and V6.1.0.15
