Error description

  • Sharding uses two types of shards, vertical and horizontal
shards. Each horizontal shard processes a subset of the catalog
(for example, catentry_id 1 - 100,000), all together making up
the entire catalog. A vertical shard contains the entire
catalog, and is needed for catalog data that has dependencies on
other catalog data (for example, catalog hierarchy data).

If only horizontal shards are used, then the data included in
the vertical shard needs to also be generated within each
horizontal shard. As of v9.0.0.6, only using horizontal shards
will allow sharding to complete successfully. If you include a
vertical shard, the indexing part of sharding process fails as
it's incorrectly looking for this dependency data (that is in
the vertical shard) inside of the horizontal shards.

Problem summary

  • USERS AFFECTED:
    9.0.0.3 ~ 9.0.0.6

    PROBLEM ABSTRACT:
Parallel processing (sharding) failing when using vertical shard

    BUSINESS IMPACT:
Customers who have migrated from V8 with Vertical sharding will
not be able to use this feature without this fix.

    RECOMMENDATION:

Problem conclusion

  • Brought back V8's capability and leveraged newly added Global
Initial to avoid duplicate preprocessing of temporary tables.
