Error description
WITH IE11 INSTALLED, PROCESS CENTER SCREEN IS BLANK AFTER YOU LOG IN TO PROCESS DESIGNER OR YOU RECEIVE A ?FAILED TO CHANGE VARIANT TYPE? ERROR IN PROCESS DESIGNER When you log in to IBM Process Designer with Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) on the system, you see one or two issues depending on the state of IBM Process Designer from a previous session: ? You see a blank screen instead of the IBM Process Center screen if this is the first time you logged in to Process Designer or a previous session ended at the Process Center screen. ? You receive the ?Failed to change variant type? error if a session of Process Designer was shut down on a view other than the Process Center perspective, such as on the Designer perspective. When other SWT-based products are closed and Process Designer is reopened, Process Designer is functional again. However, when the other product starts again, the problem reappears. You see the following error in Process Designer: org.eclipse.swt.SWTException: Failed to change Variant type result = -2147352571 at org.eclipse.swt.ole.win32.OLE.error(OLE.java:332) at org.eclipse.swt.ole.win32.Variant.getAutomation(Variant.java:276 ) at org.eclipse.swt.browser.IE.getText(IE.java:1138) at org.eclipse.swt.browser.Browser.getText(Browser.java:652) at com.lombardisoftware.client.ae.widgets.propertyeditors.common.Do cumentationPropertyEditor.updateTextWidget(DocumentationProperty Editor.java:550) ... AFFECTED PRODUCTS: IBM Business Process Manager (BPM) Advanced IBM BPM Standard IBM BPM Express
Local fix
You can uninstall IE11 or stop running other Eclipse and SWT-based tools at the same time as you run Process Designer.
Problem summary
The behavior of web browser control depends on the value of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION Windows registry key. Tools based on SWT 3.7 or newer modify the DWORD value named ?javaw.exe? when they run, which affects the behavior of the browser control that all Java processes, including IBM Process Designer, use.
Problem conclusion
A fix is available for IBM BPM V7.5.1.2, V8.5.0.1 and V8.5.5.0 that changes names of the Java executable that Process Designer uses, which isolates Process Designer from the effects of other tools that modify the ?javaw.exe? DWORD value in the registry. On Fix Central (http://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral), search for JR50589: 1. Select IBM Business Process Manager with your edition from the product selector, the installed version to the fix pack level, and your platform, and then click Continue. 2. Select APAR or SPR, enter JR50589, and click Continue. When you download fix packages, ensure that you also download the readme file for each fix. Review each readme file for additional installation instructions and information about the fix.
