Error description

  • DBX asserts with V11.1 XL C/C++ compiled binary while loading

it into dbx. However, loading is successful and debugging can
carry on despite of the assertion error. DBX loads the V10.1
compiled binary without the error message.

    $ dbx a.out
    Type 'help' for help.
    reading symbolic information ...
internal error: assertion failed at line 5618 in file object.c
    (dbx) print &__start
    0x100001a0
    (dbx) quit

The binary is compiled from many large source files that exceeds
64K lines of source in each file on 32-bit AIX.

Local fix

  • Use -q64 or trim source files within 64K lines.

Problem summary

  • PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Incocnsistent data makes it impossible for
the linker and debugger to find the line number tables.

USERS AFFECTED: Users with source files line numbers >64k in 32
    bit mode

Problem conclusion

  • Problem is fixed. DBX does not emit the warning messages any
more. However, whenever line numbers >64K lines in 32 bit mode,
debug data is incomplete. Users should make source file line
numbers < 64K lines if complete debug data is needed in 32 bit
    mode.
