Error description

  • Error Message: $ java -version -Xcompressedrefs
    
    JVMJ9VM015W Initialization error for library j9gc24(2): Failed
    to
    instantiate heap; 1M requested
    Could not create the Java virtual machine.

    Stack Trace: N/A

    When attempting to run with -Xcompressedrefs on certain levels
    of zOS 1.12 and above on z196 (zEnterprise) systems the VM fails
    to initialize.
    Removing -Xcompressedrefs shows the VM initializes correctly
    

Local fix

  • Disable -Xcompressedrefs on the Java command line options
    

Problem summary

  • The problem is caused due to an error variable within the JVM
    not being initialized correctly when running on z196.
    

Problem conclusion

  • This defect will be fixed in:
    6.0.0 SR9 FP2
    6.0.1 GA FP1
    .
    The variable which captures the memory allocation error code is
    now being initialized correctly before it is used.
    .
    To obtain the fix:
    Install build 20110322 or later
