    This behaviour can be controlled in the IBM supplied iFixes with
    this option:
    -Djava.lang.string.create.unique=true
    

Local fix

Problem summary

  • When using the StringBuffer and StringBuilder toString method,
    the produced string contains excess characters that result in a
    waste of space.
    

Problem conclusion

  • This defect will be fixed in:
    5.0.0 SR13
    6.0.0 SR10
    .
    The JVM libraries have been updated to prevent the overhead,
    this behaviour is enabled using
    -Djava.lang.string.create.unique=true
    .
    To obtain the fix:
    Install build 20110305 or later
