Error description
When compiling a file at optimization level -O3 and specifying an architecture level of -qarch=pwr4 or higher, the compiler is taking a long time during the optimization stage, and eventually encounters an internal compiler error. ** foo === End of Compilation 1 === "foo.f", 1500-004 (U) INTERNAL COMPILER ERROR while compiling foo_. Compilation ended. Contact your Service Representative and provide the following information: Internal abort. The code generation return code was 1. 1501-511 Compilation failed for file foo.f.
Local fix
Compile with -qarch=pwr3
Problem summary
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: When compiling a test case, the compiler is encountering an internal error. The error itself takes a long time ( >1 hour) to reproduce, but the compiler can be seen looping on an internal function and taking a large percentage of CPU time after a few seconds of running. Investigation showed that there is a infinite loop in dead code elimination. USERS AFFECTED: Users compiling with -qarch=pwr4 and up, as well as ppc.
Problem conclusion
The infinite loop was corrected, and the compiler completes the compiliation without error.
