Error description

  • APAR opened per request of L3 (KS) and dev (SM)

    Environment:
    Any Unix environment - This occurs for all logging within ITNM,
    but as 3.8 implements log file rotation for the .log files, the
    problem is only obvious with .trace files on 3.8 and all .log
    files on 3.7

    Installed products + versions:
    All versions of ITNM

    Current behavior/symptoms/Problem description:
    When a trace file reaches 2GB, the process associated with the
    trace file cores. This is a problem when attempting to run
    higher debug levels for extended period of time to capture a
    failure.

    Expected behavior:
    For the .trace files on 3.8 to roll over when reaching a certain
    size.

    Steps to recreate:
    The easiest way to replicate the failure is to turn on debug 4
    on ncp_disco, start a discovery of a large network and the
    ncp_disco process will likely fail before completion.
    For ncp_model - Simply turn on debug 4 and run the
    CreateAndSendTopology stitcher.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * The problem occurs on Linux when running ITNM processes at *
    * debug level 4 in large networks. Once the .trace file *
    * containing the debug information passes 2GB the process can *
    * core dump.                                                   *

    * Upgrade to                                                   *

Problem conclusion

  • Trace files are now opened with support for large files so it is
    now possible for trace files of > 2GB to be created on Linux
    platforms.

    In addition to the above it is now possible to rotate trace
    files but in order to do so you must set one of the environment
    variables such as NDE_LOGFILE_MAXSIZE to define when the
    rotation should take place. The debug level will change to 0
    just prior to the trace file rotation and then be restored to
    its original level once the file has been rotated. The default
    is to allow trace file rotation however a new configuration
    option named enableTraceFileRotation has been introduced into
    the CtrlSchema.cfg configuration file to allow this feature to
    be disabled.
